Indiana Flooding - Help for Your Pool

If flood water reached your pool, the most important thing you can do right now is leave the water in it. Here is what to do next….and how to reach us.

important note: Do not drain your pool

Ground saturated with flood water can push an empty or partly drained pool up out of the ground, or crack the shell. The water inside is what holds it down. Draining is the single most expensive mistake homeowners make after a flood — it can turn a cleanup into a full rebuild. Call us before you drain anything.

While water is high, and immediately after

Four things that protect your family and your pool.

  • Leave the water in the pool. Even if it looks awful. The weight of the water is what keeps the pool in the ground while the soil around it is saturated.

  • Nobody goes in the water. Flood water carries sewage, fuel, farm chemicals and debris. No swimming until the pool has been properly treated and tested clear.

  • Shut off power at the breaker. If water has reached or is approaching the equipment pad, cut power. Never touch pool equipment while standing in water.

  • Keep the pool secured. Gates latched, covers in place, fencing checked. Flood conditions plus an unsecured pool is a serious drowning risk for children and pets.

Once the water recedes

Work through these before you try to use the pool again.

  • Photograph everything before you touch it. Equipment pad, waterline, decking, pump, heater, any debris. Your insurance company will want this.

  • Do not restart submerged equipment. Pumps, heaters, salt cells and control boards that went underwater need inspection first. Powering them up can destroy them and create a shock hazard.

  • Expect a full water recovery, not a quick fix. Flood contamination needs shocking, clarifying, continuous filtration and rebalancing. Test strips alone will not tell you the water is safe.

  • Have the structure and electrical inspected. Shell, bonding and electrical should be checked before the pool goes back into normal use.
