Daily & Weekly Maintenance

Routine Care Basics

Check water levels daily. The water should be halfway up the skimmer opening. Adjust as needed to ensure proper skimming and pump function.

Skim the water to remove leaves and debris, check skimmer and pump baskets for clogs, and visually inspect equipment for leaks or unusual noises.

Brush walls, steps and waterline weekly to prevent algae and scale. Vacuum once a week or more often if there’s heavy debris or noticeable dirt on the bottom.

Yes. Run your pump long enough to turn over the entire pool’s water volume once per day—typically 8–12 hours, depending on the pump and pool size.

Water Testing & Chemical Balancing

Keep Your Chemistry in Check

Test pH and sanitizer levels at least twice per week in summer and weekly in cooler months. Test alkalinity and stabilizer monthly and calcium hardness every 1–3 months.

Aim for a pH of 7.2–7.8. This range ensures chlorine works effectively and prevents irritation to swimmers’ eyes and skin.

Shocking once a week is recommended during peak season, and more often after heavy rain, high use or algae blooms. Follow product instructions for dosage and ensure proper circulation.

Cloudiness often results from imbalanced chemicals, poor filtration or high bather load. Test water, shock the pool if needed and check filters for clogs.

Saltwater systems generate chlorine from salt. You still need to test and adjust chlorine levels, monitor salt concentration and occasionally add other chemicals like algaecides and stabilizers.

Cleaning & Equipment Care

Skimming, Vacuuming & Filters

  • Sand & DE filters: Backwash when pressure rises 8–10 psi above the clean baseline.

  • Cartridge filters: Rinse cartridges every 4–6 weeks and deep clean with filter cleaner every 6 months. Replace cartridges every 1–2 years.

Soak the cell in a diluted muriatic acid solution (per manufacturer instructions) to remove mineral buildup. Rinse thoroughly and reinstall. Check cells monthly during peak use.

Identify the cause—metal, organic or scale—then use the appropriate stain remover. For persistent stains, consult a professional to avoid damaging the surface.

Maintain proper sanitizer levels, circulate water adequately, brush surfaces and use algaecide as a preventative measure. Regular shocking also helps.

Air leaks in the suction line, low water levels, clogged baskets or a failing pump lid seal may be to blame. Inspect and address these areas or consult a professional.

Seasonal Maintenance & Services

Opening, Closing & Winter Care

In Indiana, most pools are opened in April or May. Opening earlier can reduce algae growth but requires heating if you want to swim right away.

Yes. Proper winterization protects plumbing and equipment from freezing. Lower water levels, blow out lines, add antifreeze and install a cover. Pools of Fun offers closing services to handle this for you.

After a storm, remove debris, backwash or clean filters, and test water chemistry. Shock the pool and adjust chemicals if needed. Ensure equipment is free of flood damage.

If closed, equipment stays off. For pools left open year-round, run pumps during freeze conditions or invest in freeze protection devices. Otherwise, winterize to prevent damage.
